Fargo Vein Care Clinics
Dr. Ed Corpus is a Phlebologist (Vein Specialist), as well as a General and Vascular Surgeon serving the Fargo and Fargo, North Dakota areas. He has more than twenty years experience in treating the whole spectrum of venous disorders and is a member of the American College of Phlebology (ACP).
Varicose veins occur when the valves in the superficial veins suffer structural damage. When valves fail, blood seeps backwards towards the feet, which causes blood to pool. As a result, the veins become dilated, tortuous, and swollen. If varicose veins are left untreated, they can multiply and become more severe.
When large varicose veins are left untreated, superficial phlebitis (irritation of the vein), thrombosis (blood clot), skin ulcers and other complications may occur. Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective non-surgical office procedure used to treat varicose veins in the legs and symptomatic hemorrhoids.
A sclerosing solution (sclerosant) is injected via a small needle into veins of various sizes to remove and permanently eliminate them. The body initially breaks down the varicose veins or hemorrhoids and eventually absorbs them. Compression stockings are worn for a recommended period time after treatment.
Most patients experience a slight burning sensation with the injections. Side-effects will vary depending on a patient's general tolerance for receiving injections, as well as medications used. Occasionally, bruising and temporary discoloration may occur.
Sclerotherapy is also an option used to stop bleeding for first and second degree hemorrhoids. The sclerosing mixture is injected at the base of each large vein (hemorrhoid) above the dentate line where it is painless.
