Varicose veins occur when the valves in the superficial veins suffer structural damage. They become dilated and tortuous. When these valves fail the blood seeps back toward the feet causing swelling and pooling of the blood. If varicose veins are left untreated they can multiply and become more severe.
Superficial phlebitis (irritation of vein), thrombosis (blood clot) and skin ulcers are complications when large varicose veins go untreated. Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective non-surgical office procedure utilized to treat varicose veins in the legs and symptomatic hemorrhoids as well.
A sclerosing solution (sclerosant) is injected using a very tiny needle into veins of various sized to obliterate and eventually eliminate them. The body breaks down the varicose veins and hemorrhoids and absorbs them in time. Compression stockings are worn for a time after treatment.
Most patients experience a slight burning sensation with the injections. Side-effects vary with the medications used and one's tolerance for receiving injections in general. Occasionally, bruising and temporary discoloration may occur.
Sclerotherapy for hemorrhoids is an option used to stop bleeding for first and second degree hemorrhoids. The mixture is injected at the base of each large vein (hemorrhoid) above the dentate line where it is PAINLESS!
